piraeus
Piraeus – known from ancient times as the port of Athens – was the port which together with Elefsina and Megara played a significant role in trade in ancient Greek history. It always supported Athens and the Athenians always had a soft spot for the city of Piraeus. Today, Piraeus is one of the largest cruise ship ports of the country and of Europe. It was Themistocles who initially discovered the importance of the port of Piraeus for Athens. The result of which was for Athens to become the head of nautical power, having Piraeus as its port at a time when the army had a close relationship with naval power.
